Plant

Now that we have learned all about what trees do for our planet, it is time to plant! Make sure to read through the directions on how to properly plant a sapling.
- Find a Good Spot– It is important that you first determine an appropriate area before you start planting. Make sure the tree has lots of sun and that it is not under any wire lines. Also, pick a spot at least a few feet away from your house, sidewalks, and any other trees to prevent the roots from damaging anything. You also want to be sure that you are not digging into any piping or wiring. Be aware that as the tree grows, the roots will spread.
- Digging the Hole– First, make sure that the soil is not too dry or compacted. You may need to loosen up the soil with a shovel and water it, to create a healthy spot for your sapling. When digging the hole, make sure that the diameter is about twice the length of the root ball. The hole should be no deeper than the length of the roots.
- Planting the Tree– Place the sapling into the hole, be careful to not damage any roots. When the sapling is in the hole, check that the top roots just under the surface of soil (you do not want the roots buried too deep). Then, refill the hole with the soil and pat down the area. Do not pack the soil to tightly, this could damage roots. Then, water the sapling.
Remember that once your tree is planted, you still have to take care of it. Learn how to in the next step:
